Overview
A Regions Layout is an ordered placement policy for the single shared TaskManSync workspace. It describes opportunities for items to be placed, not fixed slots, taskbar lanes, or a picture of the current taskbar.
For example, a layout might describe an arrangement like:
Firefox
Konsole
Launcher
Decoration
Firefox
Launcher
DolphinThe repeated entries are intentional. Each Region is one entry in an ordered list, not a reserved slot for a particular application, so the same application can appear more than once in a layout.
Regions can describe five kinds of entries:
- Application — matches Tasks for the same application. The application must match the identity used by TaskManSync.
- Decoration — matches a particular Decoration definition.
- Launcher — matches the Launcher category, not a particular Launcher.
- Widget — matches the hosted Plasma Widget category, not a particular Widget.
- Unassigned — is an optional fallback for eligible items that match no more specific Region.
A Region does not become permanently attached to a particular Task, Launcher, Widget, or Decoration. These workspace items remain independent and are all part of the same shared Order. See Task Order Synchronization for how TaskManSync applets share that workspace.
An Application or Decoration Region matches its corresponding application identity or Decoration definition. Repeated Application, Decoration, Launcher, and Widget Regions are allowed and provide repeated opportunities. Repeated Decoration Regions are only useful when the Decoration supports multiple active placements; a Scripted Decoration supports one. A Regions Layout can contain at most one Unassigned Region.
When an item does not match a specific Region, it can use Unassigned if the layout has that Region and the item is eligible. Launcher and Widget items are not eligible for Unassigned: they participate only through their own category Region. Without a matching Region or an eligible Unassigned Region, an item remains outside Regions policy.
The Active Regions Layout guides automatic placement for new items that match its Regions, and for eligible unmatched items when Unassigned is present. That placement does not move existing items. To arrange the current workspace, explicitly choose Arrange Now for a saved layout. Regions are not continuously enforced, so manually moving an item is not undone merely because a layout exists.
Regions control placement, not taskbar appearance or Plasma panels. They do not change how an ordinary Plasma task manager works. For task width and alignment, see Other Settings. For Launcher and Decoration details, see Launchers and Regions and Decorations and Regions.
